How to Check Fuel Line Connections on a Vertical All-in-One Diesel Air Heater

2026-10-14 17:10:16

The fuel path on a vertical all-in-one diesel air heater carries small doses of diesel under low pressure from the tank to the metering pump. A loose hose or a cracked fitting introduces air into the line, which is a leading cause of hesitant starts and flameouts. A periodic check of every connection takes only minutes and prevents these annoying failures.

Trace the Full Fuel Path

Follow the line from the auxiliary tank or main tank pickup to the inlet of the metering pump, and from the pump outlet to the burner. Note each push-fit connector, hose clamp, and filter in the line. Fuel for these heaters runs at low pressure, so a leak appears as dampness or staining rather than a spray, which makes visual inspection the first line of defense.

What to Look For

Check each hose for brittleness, cracking, or soft bulging where it pushes onto a barbed fitting. Push-fit connectors should click fully home and resist a gentle tug. Look for damp diesel stains or a strong fuel smell around the filter housing and the pump. Air often enters where a hose has worked loose on a barb, so give each clamp a light tightening with the correct screwdriver or wrench.

Bleeding and Testing After Assembly

After reconnecting any fitting, the fuel line may need bleeding. Run the heater through a few start cycles, listening for the pump ticking steadily, until fuel reaches the burner and combustion starts cleanly. Inspect the joints again after the first run, because pressure and vibration can reveal a slow leak. A properly sealed fuel line keeps the pump primed and the heater starting reliably on cold mornings. Marking each fitting with a small paint dot after a repair makes the next inspection quick, since any newly oily dot stands out immediately. When a line has been disturbed, priming the pump manually before the first start also reduces the number of aborted ignition attempts that follow an air leak.
