How to Inspect the Glow Plug in a Vertical All-in-One Diesel Air Heater

The glow plug is the part that preheats the combustion chamber before diesel arrives, and its condition largely determines whether the heater starts on the first attempt. On a vertical all-in-one diesel air heater it is usually accessible behind a side service cover, so a periodic inspection takes only a few minutes and prevents unexpected start failures.
When and Why to Check It
Plan a glow plug inspection at the start of each heating season, and again if the heater begins taking longer to light or failing on the first try. Over time the heating coil carbonizes from repeated combustion cycles, and its heat output drops. A weak plug cannot bring the chamber up to ignition temperature, especially when the weather is at its coldest, which is precisely when reliable heating matters most.
Removing and Inspecting the Plug
Switch off the power and let the unit cool fully. Open the service cover on the burner side, disconnect the plug connector, and unscrew the plug with a suitable deep socket. Look at the heating element: a light tan or grey coating is normal, while thick black soot or a broken coil means replacement. Clean light deposits gently with a soft brush and contact cleaner, but avoid sanding the element, which damages its coating.
Testing Before Refitting
Bench-test the plug by connecting it briefly to the rated voltage for ten to twenty seconds; the tip should glow cherry red. If it heats weakly, unevenly, or not at all, fit a replacement. Reinstall with the correct torque and a new sealing washer, reconnect the connector, and run two or three short start cycles to confirm smooth ignition. Keeping a spare plug in the toolbox means a winter failure becomes a ten-minute repair rather than a day without heat.
