Vertical Diesel Heater Space Saving

Space is the limiting factor in most van conversions, truck cabs and mobile workshops. A vertical diesel heater is designed around a narrow upright footprint, so it fits where a horizontal heater cannot. This article explains why the vertical form factor saves space, where it installs and how buyers get the most from a small mounting bay.
The Space Advantage of a Vertical Body
A horizontal heater lies along its length, demanding a long, low bay under a seat or bed. A vertical diesel heater stands upright, stacking the combustion chamber, exchanger and fan on top of one another. The result is a small square footprint that fits in the corner of a cabinet, beside a wheel arch or under a bench where the available height is greater than the available length. For converters, this means the heater stops dictating the furniture layout.
Where It Fits in a Van
Popular mounting spots include a kitchen plinth, the base of a wardrobe, a locker behind the seat or a narrow void beside the fridge. Because the unit is tall and narrow, it can share a compartment with water containers and electrical parts if clearance is respected. The warm air duct then runs up to the living area rather than across a long floor, which keeps the duct hidden inside the furniture.
Short Ducting and Less Lost Heat
Mounting the heater close to the room it heats reduces duct length, so less warm air escapes through uninsulated pipe. A short, direct duct also means the fan works less, which lowers both power draw and noise. In a space-saving install, the exhaust and intake ports on the top of the vertical body connect quickly to the outside, leaving the rest of the cabinet free for storage.
Planning the Clearance
Saving space does not mean crowding the heater. Leave the clearance the manual requires around the casing for intake air and cooling, and keep the service panel facing out. Reserve a small access panel so the glow plug and fuel filter can be reached without removing the whole unit. A well-planned space-saving installation keeps the van usable and serviceable.
Why Converters Prefer Vertical Units
For B2B converters and installers, a vertical heater simplifies every project: it needs a smaller mounting hole, shorter pipes and less fabrication. It works in both 12V vans and 24V trucks, and the same chassis of heater covers 2 kW to 8 kW. By choosing the vertical layout, builders free up storage, reduce duct losses and deliver a cleaner finish for their customers.
