When Does a Split Diesel Air Heater Beat an All-in-One Model?

All-in-one diesel air heaters pack the combustion chamber, fan, and electronics into a single compact box, which makes them simple to mount and inexpensive to fit. Split systems separate the heater body from the air outlet, connected by duct hoses, and they cost more and take longer to install. Neither design is universally better; each fits a different set of vehicle constraints.
Why Most Owners Choose the All-in-One Form
For a day cab, a small boat cabin, or a compact workshop, the all-in-one unit is usually the sensible choice. It bolts to one floor plate, runs one exhaust pipe, and needs only a fuel and electrical connection. Installation time stays low, and there are fewer hoses to leak or dislodge. The single-box design also keeps spare parts simple, because every component lives behind one service cover.
When Noise or Heat Needs Separation
A split layout earns its keep when the operator wants the warm air outlet in the sleeping area but the noisy combustion chamber mounted several meters away in a less occupied space. Long ducting carries the quiet warm air to the bedroom while the fan and pump noise stays in a garage locker or under a bench. Split systems also help when the cabin floor has no flat spare patch; the main body can live under a seat while the outlet grille sits on a wall.
Weight, Ducting Losses, and Cost Trade-Offs
Split heaters trade simplicity for flexibility: they need extra duct hoses, an extra blower, and more mounting brackets, which adds weight and cost. Long thin ducts also lose heat along their run and reduce airflow, so very long runs call for a slightly larger rated unit. If the install can place the all-in-one box within a meter of where the warm air is needed, it remains the efficient, lower-cost option. Reach for the split design only when the space genuinely demands the separation.
