How Many BTU Does a Typical 5 kW Diesel Air Heater Deliver?

2026-10-14 17:31:42

Shopping for a diesel air heater, buyers meet both metric and imperial numbers: a nameplate may say 5 kW while a sales page quotes BTU per hour. The two describe the same heat output, just measured on different scales. Converting between them removes confusion when comparing units from different suppliers.

The Conversion Factor

One kilowatt of heat equals about 3412 BTU per hour. Applying that, a heater rated at 5 kW delivers roughly 17,000 BTU per hour at its nominal output. A 2 kW unit lands near 6,800 BTU per hour, and an 8 kW unit near 27,300 BTU per hour. These figures describe heat delivered to the air, not fuel energy consumed.

Why Delivered Heat Is Lower Than Fuel Energy

A small portion of the fuel's energy leaves through the exhaust as waste heat, so the heat transferred to the cabin is somewhat less than the energy in the fuel burned. Modern units transfer a large share of that energy to the air, but the nameplate kW already reflects the useful heat output rather than the fuel input.

Matching the Number to the Space

Roughly 17,000 BTU per hour is enough to take the chill out of a large sleeper cab or a moderately insulated camper in cold weather. In a well-insulated van, the same unit will cycle often at its lower burn rate. Converting kW to BTU simply helps buyers cross-check that the advertised output matches the space they intend to heat.

Avoiding Over-Sizing

Converting to BTU sometimes pushes buyers toward a larger unit than the space needs. A heater that is too powerful reaches temperature in minutes and then shuts off, cycling repeatedly through noisy warm-up phases. The repeated starts also waste fuel and carbon the burner faster. Matching the kW to the space means the heater lingers at a comfortable, steady burn.

Checking the lower heat output in BTU, not only the maximum, shows whether the unit can turn down enough for a small room. A broad range of output is more useful than a high single number.
