What Causes the Whistling Sound in a Diesel Air Heater Intake?

2026-10-14 17:28:44

Many new owners notice a thin, whistling tone from a diesel air heater that was not obvious during the first few runs. The sound is not usually a sign of mechanical wear; more often it comes from the way air rushes into the combustion inlet and passes through narrow ducts. Identifying the source makes it straightforward to reduce.

Airflow as the Sound Source

The combustion fan pulls outside air through a small intake hose. When that hose is kinked, too long, or fitted with a sharp bend, the air accelerates and becomes turbulent at the restriction. Turbulent flow through a narrow opening produces tones in the same way as blowing across a pipe. The pitch rises as fan speed increases during warm-up.

Why Duct Routing Matters

A tight bend near the intake inlet is a common culprit. The whistle often changes when the vehicle rocks or when someone presses on the intake hose, because the internal cross-section changes. Loose mounting clips can also let a hose vibrate against a bulkhead, turning airflow noise into a rattle.

Simple Ways to Dampen the Tone

Adding a purpose-built intake silencer or enlarging the hose bend reduces the velocity that drives the whistle. Routing the intake away from hard surfaces and securing it with rubber-lined clips prevents secondary vibration. In most installs the high-pitched tone drops to a low, steady fan hum once the duct path is straightened and unrestricted.

Other Sources of Cabin Noise

Not every sound from the heater is the intake whistle. The fuel pump emits a regular clicking pulse, and the combustion fan has its own bearing tone. Isolating which sound annoys the sleeper decides the fix: an intake silencer helps a whistle, while rubber mounting feet quiet a rattle, and a different pump mounting reduces the click. A short listening test before finalizing the install points to the right treatment.

Background road and wind noise also change perception; a tone that stands out in a quiet campsite may vanish while driving. This is why owners notice intake noise most during calm nights, not on the move.
