What Standby Current Does a Vertical All-in-One Diesel Air Heater Pull When Switched Off?

2026-10-14 17:45:00

A diesel heater that is left connected between seasons surprises some owners with a slowly draining battery. The cause is standby current: the controller and display remain awake to respond to the remote control. Understanding this small draw helps plan battery care when the vehicle is parked for weeks.

What Stays Energized

When the heater is off, the burner, fan, and pump are dormant, but the control electronics remain powered to read the thermostat and listen for the remote. This usually pulls only a few milliamps. It is not enough to matter overnight, but it adds up over a long lay-up.

The Long-Parked Effect

A few milliamps across several weeks can remove a noticeable fraction of a small battery's charge, especially in cold weather when batteries already lose capacity. A vehicle stored for a month may return to a low battery partly because of this standby draw, even though nothing was running.

Simple Mitigation

Disconnecting the heater supply or fitting a master switch removes the standby drain during long storage. For daily use, the tiny draw is negligible and is outweighed by the convenience of instant remote start. Knowing the current exists simply prevents the surprise of a flat battery after a quiet period.

Comparing Standby Load With Other Devices

The heater's few milliamps of standby is small next to a always-on stereo memory or a tracking device, but it still counts on a parked vehicle. Over a month, a few milliamps remove a modest fraction of a small battery. Fleet vehicles that already carry telematics often run a master disconnect that kills all standby loads when the truck is parked for the season.

For a daily-driven vehicle, the draw is replenished on the next run and is never noticed. It only matters when the vehicle stands still for weeks, which is exactly when a disconnect switch is most useful.
