12V vs 24V Diesel Air Heater

One of the first choices buyers make when ordering a diesel air heater is whether to specify a 12V or a 24V unit. The voltage does not change how warm the air feels, but it decides which vehicle electrical system the heater, control panel and glow plug can safely run on. Choosing the wrong version is a common and costly mistake, so this guide explains the real differences and how to pick the right one.
The Core Difference
A 12V diesel air heater is designed to run from a standard 12 volt electrical system, while a 24V heater is built for trucks, buses, lorries and other heavy vehicles that use a 24 volt battery bank. The internal electronics, fuel pump and glow plug are rated accordingly, and the units are not interchangeable without a converter. Connecting a 12V heater to a 24V supply will damage the controller and glow plug almost immediately.
Which Vehicles Use 12V and 24V
Most cars, vans, campervans, motorhomes and light commercial vehicles use a 12V system, so a 12V air heater is the natural match. Heavy trucks, delivery lorries, coaches, agricultural machines and larger boats typically run on 24V, where the starter motor demands more cranking power. When in doubt, check the rating printed on the battery or the fuse box before ordering, because the heater must match the vehicle's nominal voltage.
Wiring and Battery Considerations
A 24V heater draws roughly half the current of a 12V unit producing the same heat, which allows thinner power cables and puts less strain on the battery during long overnight runs. A 12V heater on a small leisure battery needs a healthy battery and preferably a solar charger, because repeated cold starts can drain it by morning. In both cases, fit a dedicated fuse near the battery and run the positive cable directly from the battery terminal rather than from a shared accessory circuit.
Performance and Warm-Up
Heat output in kilowatts is the same whether the heater is 12V or 24V; a 5kW unit blows the same volume of warm air on either voltage. The practical difference is in current draw and cable gauge. A 24V system supplies the glow plug and fuel pump more steadily, which can make the first ignition more reliable in very low temperatures, while a 12V system benefits from a higher-capacity battery to avoid voltage sag during ignition.
Can You Run a 12V Heater on 24V
A 12V heater should never be connected directly to a 24V supply. Where only a 12V heater is available, a properly rated DC-DC converter can step the voltage down, but this adds cost, heat and another point of failure. For trucks and other 24V vehicles, the simpler and safer route is to order the 24V version from the start. The same logic applies in reverse: a 24V heater will not run correctly on 12V and may refuse to ignite.
