Can a Horizontal All-in-One Diesel Air Heater Warm a Small Greenhouse Off the Grid?

Gardeners who overwinter tender plants in a small greenhouse face a difficult trade-off: frost will damage seedlings, yet running an electric heater off a long extension lead is impractical. A horizontal all-in-one diesel air heater offers an off-grid way to hold the greenhouse just above freezing, tucked discreetly beneath a bench.
What the Greenhouse Actually Needs
A greenhouse usually does not need a warm room, only a few degrees above freezing to keep plants alive through cold nights. A 2 kilowatt horizontal heater, set on a thermostat, will cycle on when the air approaches zero and switch off once the air rises to around 5 degrees. That intermittent duty uses very little fuel over a winter of nights.
Mounting and Ducting in a Glass House
Place the heater under a sturdy bench where it is shielded from water spray and out of the reach of watering cans. Point the warm outlet down the central path rather than directly at plants, so the air circulates around the bench. Run the exhaust and combustion air intake through a low wall panel, terminating outside away from doors, because the glass traps fumes quickly in a sealed greenhouse.
Ventilation and Plant Safety
Greenhouses need a small vent cracked open even in winter, both for plant health and to supply fresh air. Keep the fuel bottle outside or in a ventilated compartment, and monitor the fuel level through spells of very cold weather. With a thermostat holding a frost-free minimum, the heater protects tender plants without drying them out, and it runs independently of any mains supply. Gardeners in very cold regions often add a small thermostat so the heater runs only when the greenhouse air approaches freezing, saving diesel through mild spells. Checking the exhaust outlet after each snowfall prevents drift from blocking the pipe, and a low guard around the tail keeps boots and tools away from the hot metal on the path to the cold frames.
