Vertical vs Horizontal All-in-One Diesel Air Heater: Which Suits a Low-Ceiling Cabin?

2026-10-14 17:18:22

Low-roofed cabs, converted vans with low headroom, and shallow under-bunk spaces present a mounting problem: the heater must heat the room without stealing the little headroom available. Comparing the vertical and horizontal all-in-one diesel air heater around this single constraint makes the choice clearer than generic layout advice.

The Headroom Constraint

A vertical unit stands 40 to 50 centimeters tall on a small footprint. Beneath a low bench or a close-fitting bunk, that height may collide with the surface above or leave no room for a duct elbow. A horizontal box lies only about 10 to 15 centimeters high but stretches sideways, fitting into the flat cavity where a vertical unit cannot physically fit.

When the Vertical Box Still Wins

If the available patch is a narrow floor corner beside a seat, and headroom above it is open, the vertical unit uses very little floor area and blows warm air upward through the footwell. It also keeps the service cover on a reachable side. In a full-size sleeper cab with standing headroom, this upright placement is usually the tidier option.

When the Horizontal Box Is the Answer

Where the only free space is a long, low cavity under a bench, cot, or shelf, the horizontal all-in-one diesel air heater is the natural fit. Its low profile stays out of the walking path, and the short duct run to the nearby outlet keeps airflow strong. Measure both the height and the length of the available cavity before ordering, and let those dimensions decide rather than habit or brand preference. A quick cardboard mock-up of the heater footprint under the bench reveals the fit before any drilling begins, and it takes only a few minutes. Measuring the outlet position on both the upright and flat models also shows which one lines up with the shortest duct run, because a straight outlet into the room beats a long bent hose for airflow.
