How Do I Size a Diesel Air Heater for My Work Space?

2026-10-14 16:55:40

Choosing the right kilowatt rating for a diesel air heater is one of the few decisions that directly affects comfort, fuel use, and battery drain. A unit that is too small struggles to lift the temperature on cold days, while one that is oversized cycles on and off, wastes fuel, and shortens its own service life. Rather than guessing from the box label, a few simple estimates based on the space itself give a far more reliable starting point.

Measure the Enclosed Volume First

Start by measuring the interior length, width, and height of the cab, cabin, or small room in meters and multiply them to get the cubic volume. A day cab on a delivery truck might measure roughly 6 cubic meters, while an insulated container office can reach 20 cubic meters. As a rough planning figure, allow between 60 and 100 watts of heating power per cubic meter for reasonably insulated spaces in mild winters, and move toward the upper end when the shell is thin, poorly sealed, or exposed to wind.

Adjust for Insulation and Target Temperature

Insulation changes the calculation more than raw volume alone. A well-sealed fiberglass truck sleeper loses heat slowly, so a 2 kilowatt unit often holds 18 to 20 degrees Celsius overnight. A thin steel site hut with single-glazed windows loses heat quickly and may need 5 kilowatts just to hold a comfortable working temperature at minus 5 degrees. Also decide how quickly you want the space to warm: a faster warm-up calls for extra capacity, while a heater left to run for an hour can start smaller.

Match the Rating to Real Running Time

Finally, think about how the heater will actually be used. A unit that warms the cab for 30 minutes before a shift can be sized for the space, but a heater that runs all night must leave comfortable reserves so it is not cycling at its maximum output. Add about 20 percent to the calculated figure to account for doors opening, drafts, and the occasional cold snap. This small buffer usually pays back in steadier temperatures and a quieter, longer-lived unit.
