How Does the Thermostatic Control on a Diesel Air Heater Maintain Room Temperature?

2026-10-14 16:58:26

A diesel air heater with thermostatic control does not heat at a fixed roar and then switch off. Instead it reads the cabin temperature continuously and adjusts the amount of fuel injected and the speed of the fan to track the target set on the panel. This modulation is the reason a well-adjusted unit holds a cabin near 19 degrees all night instead of swinging from roasting to freezing.

How the Controller Reads the Space

The control unit relies on a temperature sensor, usually mounted near the display or inside the heater body, to sample incoming air. When the sensed temperature sits well below the set point, the controller runs the combustion chamber at a high output dose to warm the space quickly. As the room approaches the target, it steps the fuel pump down to smaller doses and lowers fan speed so the heat output matches the small ongoing losses through walls and windows.

Modulation Versus Simple On-Off Cycling

Lower-cost heaters without true modulation switch between full power and complete shutdown, which produces noticeable temperature swings and frequent restart cycles. A modulating thermostat narrows that band to within a degree or two of the set point, so occupants do not wake up sweating or shivering. Fewer restarts also reduce glow plug use and fuel consumption, because each ignition cycle consumes a small extra amount of diesel.

Setting the Target for Comfort and Economy

Operators can tune comfort by choosing the set point sensibly. Each degree above 18 to 20 degrees raises fuel use by a noticeable amount over an eight-hour night, so a target of 19 degrees usually balances warmth and economy. When the sensor reads oddly, for example showing a very warm cab while the feet area feels cold, repositioning the display away from direct warm air improves accuracy. The thermostat then tracks the real average temperature of the space rather than the air right next to the outlet.
