Why Does My Diesel Air Heater Shut Off Soon After Igniting?

Few faults are more frustrating than a diesel air heater that glows, fires for a few seconds, and then shuts down with a fault light. The behavior means the controller saw ignition begin but did not see the flame stay stable long enough. Working through the likely causes in order usually locates the problem without swapping parts at random.
Check the Fuel Supply First
A very common reason for a short flame is weak fuel delivery. Air trapped in the fuel line after running the tank dry, a cracked suction hose, or a worn metering pump can all deliver enough fuel for the first attempt but not enough to keep combustion going. Loosen the outlet hose on the pump, run a start cycle, and watch whether fuel pulses out in a steady rhythm. A dribble or an irregular beat suggests air in the line or a pump that needs attention.
Look at Combustion Air and Exhaust Flow
Next, confirm that the heater can breathe. A blocked intake filter, a kinked combustion air hose, or an iced exhaust pipe starves the chamber of oxygen and the flame dies. On cold mornings, exhaust outlets can freeze over with frost and condensation, creating exactly this symptom. Disconnect the exhaust pipe at the heater outlet and run a test cycle; if the unit stays lit with the pipe removed, the blockage lies in the exhaust run.
Review Sensors and Glow Plug Condition
If fuel and air both look normal, the remaining suspects are the flame sensor and the glow plug. A temperature probe coated in soot can read the chamber as cold and command a shutdown, while an aging glow plug produces a weak first flame that the controller rejects. Removing and gently brushing the probe often restores correct readings. When repeated attempts still fail, recording the fault code shown on the display helps match the behavior to the right repair step.
