How Is the Combustion Chamber Arranged Inside a Vertical All-in-One Diesel Air Heater?

A vertical all-in-one diesel air heater stands upright on a small floor footprint, and the internal parts are stacked along the height of the casing rather than spread sideways. That stacking is the whole reason the unit slips into narrow gaps under seats, beside toolboxes, or against cab walls. Understanding the internal layout helps when planning duct positions and service access.
The Vertical Stack of Components
Typically the combustion chamber and heat exchanger occupy the lower half of the vertical casing, while the combustion and cabin fans sit above or alongside them. The electronic control board, display connector, and wiring terminals cluster toward the upper rear, where they stay cooler and easier to reach. The fuel pump may mount directly on the side of the unit or sit in a small external bay, depending on the model.
How Air Moves Through the Upright Body
Cold cabin air is drawn in through a side grille, pushed upward past the warm heat exchanger walls, and exits through an upper or side outlet that a hot-air duct connects to. Combustion air takes a separate shorter path, entering through its own filtered port and leaving through the bottom exhaust fitting. Because the hot chamber sits low in the case, the exterior panels above it stay relatively cool, which simplifies mounting near trim.
Service Access in a Vertical Box
The vertical form usually puts the glow plug and burner service cover on the side or bottom, so routine checks do not mean lifting the whole unit out. The intake filter slides out from a front slot. This arrangement suits installations where floor space is scarce but a little headroom exists, because the box grows upward rather than outward, leaving floor around it free for steps or storage.
