How Much Diesel Does a Horizontal All-in-One Diesel Air Heater Burn per Night?

2026-10-14 17:17:49

Understanding overnight fuel use helps drivers and fleet managers budget for winter heating and plan refills. A horizontal all-in-one diesel air heater burns surprisingly little for the warmth it delivers, but the exact figure depends on the room, the weather, and how the thermostat is set. A realistic estimate is enough for planning.

Typical Nighttime Consumption

A 2 kilowatt to 5 kilowatt horizontal unit burns around 0.1 to 0.5 liters per hour while modulating. Over a ten-hour night in a reasonably insulated sleeper, that adds up to roughly 1 to 3 liters of diesel. On a bitterly cold, windy night the heater works harder and may approach the upper end, while on a mild night it barely runs and uses under a liter.

Factors That Push Consumption Up

Thin walls, large windows, a high set temperature, and frequent door openings all raise the burn rate. A heater set to 22 degrees uses noticeably more than one set to 18 degrees. Similarly, a unit that is oversized for the space still burns fuel during its frequent start cycles, so matching the rating to the room keeps overnight use lower.

Measuring Your Own Number

A reliable figure comes from your own setup: fill a marked auxiliary tank, run the heater overnight, and read the level in the morning. Divide the liters used by the running hours and repeat on a couple of different nights. With that number, a quick multiplication tells you how many nights a tank of diesel will last and what the monthly heating budget looks like, without relying on rough manufacturer averages. Over a full winter, a modest set-point of 18 degrees rather than 21 degrees typically trims the monthly diesel bill by a noticeable margin. Owners who keep a simple log sheet of the nightly burn also notice patterns, such as extra fuel use on windy nights, which helps them decide whether better door seals would pay back over the next season.
