How Often Should I Clean the Intake Filter of My Diesel Air Heater?

2026-10-14 16:57:24

The intake filter on a diesel air heater traps dust, pollen, and fine grit before they reach the combustion chamber and the cabin fan. Over time it loads up with debris, and a blocked filter changes the air-to-fuel ratio inside the chamber, leading to harder starts, sootier exhaust, and uneven heat. Establishing a simple inspection rhythm keeps this small part from turning into a costly fault.

A Baseline Inspection Schedule

As a starting point, inspect the cabin air filter every 200 operating hours, or at least once at the start of each heating season. Units that run in dusty environments, such as on farm tractors, quarry trucks, or roadside recovery vehicles, need a shorter interval of around 100 hours. The combustion air intake, which draws outside air through a separate small filter, should get the same check because road dust and snow spray accumulate there as well.

How to Tell When It Needs Attention

Remove the filter and hold it up to a light. If the pleated material appears grey or caked along the edges and very little light passes through, it is time to clean or replace it. Owners often notice the symptoms before they see the filter: weaker warm airflow, a longer start cycle, or a faint acrid smell when the heater kicks in. Any of these signals justifies opening the cover and inspecting the element rather than waiting for the scheduled hour count.

Cleaning Method and Replacement Tips

Most fabric foam filters can be rinsed with clean water and a mild detergent, then left to dry fully before refitting; a damp filter restricts airflow and encourages mold. Paper elements are better replaced than washed. Reinstall the filter so the air flows in the direction marked on the frame, and close the cover firmly to avoid unfiltered bypass. Keeping a spare element in the toolbox means a dusty filter never delays a morning warm-up.
