How Should I Store a Diesel Air Heater Over Summer?

When the heating season ends, many owners simply switch the diesel air heater off and leave it until the first cold morning. Units left like that often greet autumn with sticky fuel lines, hardened seals, and surprised owners. A short off-season preparation takes under an hour and keeps the heater ready for reliable starts the following winter.
Run It Dry or Drain the Fuel Lines
Diesel left sitting in the pump and injectors over several months oxidizes and forms a waxy residue that can block the tiny metering passages. Before storage, run the heater until it consumes the fuel in the feed line and shuts itself off naturally, then disconnect the suction hose. Alternatively, drain the auxiliary tank and lines into a suitable container. Avoid leaving a full tank of untreated diesel over the warm months, when oxidation is fastest.
Clean the External Surfaces and Filters
Wipe the casing with a damp cloth to remove road dust, salt residue, and insect splatter that would otherwise bake on over summer. Remove the cabin air filter and either wash or replace it, and clear any spider webs or wasp nests from the combustion air intake, which insects find attractive during storage. Cover the exhaust outlet with a plastic bag and tape to block wasps and rain, but remember to remove it before next season's first run.
Protect the Electricals and Keep Notes
Disconnect the heater power lead at the battery terminal so the unit does not draw standby current over summer. Spray the connector with contact preservative if it shows corrosion. Jot a short note inside the vehicle recording the last service date, the filter condition, and any intermittent fault seen in spring, so next autumn's restart starts from known information rather than guesswork.
