Why Is My Diesel Air Heater Blowing Cold Air Even When Running?

A heater that hums and blows air but never delivers warmth is a deceptive fault, because the fan and electronics appear to work. In most cases the combustion side has not actually lit, and the unit is simply pushing unheated cabin air through the casing. A logical check of the ignition chain usually reveals where the cycle is breaking.
Confirm Whether the Flame Ever Lights
Switch the unit on and listen for the sequence: the glow plug warms, the fuel pump begins its ticking, and then combustion starts after a short delay. If you never hear the pump ticking, the issue is upstream in fuel delivery or the pump itself. If you hear the pump but no ignition, watch the exhaust: a cold, still tail pipe confirms the flame is not forming, while a warm exhaust after a minute suggests heat is being generated but not reaching the cabin air.
Check Fuel Delivery and Air Supply
Stale or waxy fuel, an air leak on the suction side, or a blocked inline filter can stop the small doses of diesel from reaching the chamber. Loosen the fuel outlet on the pump and run a start cycle to watch for steady pulses. At the same time, verify that the combustion air intake and exhaust pipe are not blocked by snow, nests, or debris, since a blocked exhaust aborts ignition on most controllers.
Look at the Glow Plug and Temperature Sensor
A glow plug that has burned out cannot preheat the chamber, so cold fuel never vaporizes and ignition fails. Remove the plug, inspect its coil, and test whether it heats when powered. A soot-covered temperature sensor can also fool the controller into thinking the chamber is already warm, skipping the glow phase. Cleaning the probe or replacing a worn plug usually restores the heat cycle, after which the outlet should turn warm within a few minutes.
