How to Route Intake and Exhaust Ducts for a Horizontal All-in-One Diesel Air Heater

2026-10-14 17:21:04

The pipes on a horizontal all-in-one diesel air heater determine both its reliability and its safety. Combustion air must stay clean, exhaust must leave without leaking, and the two must never be routed close enough to mix. Routing them carefully during installation prevents a long list of later faults.

The Combustion Air Intake

Draw combustion air from outside the heated space through a dedicated intake hose, not from the cabin itself. Pick an intake point on the outside of the vehicle or building that is away from the exhaust tail pipe, dusty roads, and spray from the wheels. Fit a small filter at the intake end and keep the hose short and free of kinks, so the chamber always receives the air it needs.

The Exhaust Run

The exhaust pipe carries hot gases and must slope gently downward toward the tail outlet so condensation drains out. Keep the run as short as practical, use proper exhaust-rated hose and clamps, and support it every half meter. Point the tail pipe down and away from doors, vents, and ground-level air intakes. Wrap sections near wiring or plastic in heat shielding, and never let the pipe touch a fuel line.

The Warm Air Duct to the Room

Separately, the heated air duct carries warmth from the outlet to where people sit. Keep this duct smooth, short, and insulated if it passes through a cold cavity, because a long uninsulated run loses heat along the way. Avoid sharp bends that crush the duct and choke the fan. With intake, exhaust, and warm air routed as three distinct paths, the heater breathes correctly and delivers steady, safe warmth. A short test run with the ducts connected lets you feel every joint for leaks before the side panels are refitted for winter. Where the combustion air intake sits near a dusty road, adding a small removable filter sleeve makes spring cleaning simple, because the sleeve pulls off without touching the rest of the pipework.
