Vertical Diesel Air Heater Installation

A correct installation is what turns a vertical diesel air heater into reliable, quiet and safe warmth. Because the unit handles combustion, exhaust and electrical supply together, mounting decisions made on day one determine service life and running noise. This guide covers the key installation points for a vertical all-in-one diesel heater in vans, campers and trucks.
Choosing the Mounting Position
The vertical heater should sit on a flat, solid surface inside the vehicle, such as a floor cavity, bench base or cabinet shelf, and stay accessible for service. Keep it away from direct water exposure and fuel spillage. Mount the unit as low and central as practical to shorten ducting, but leave clearance around the casing for airflow and heat dissipation. The exhaust outlet must always point away from the passenger compartment, air intake and any flammable materials.
Exhaust and Intake Routing
The exhaust pipe carries hot combustion gas outside, so it must be fully sealed, routed downward where possible and fitted with a silencer to reduce noise. Never route the exhaust through a sealed floor cavity without draining water away. The combustion air intake draws outside air for the burner and must be separate from the cabin warm-air ducting. Check that both pipes are fixed firmly so engine vibration does not loosen the seals over time.
Fuel and Electrical Connections
The fuel pump taps into the vehicle diesel tank through a dedicated feed line, usually with a non-return valve and filter. Mount the pump at the angle specified by the manufacturer, because pump timing depends on its orientation. Connect the main power directly to the battery with an appropriately rated fuse, and run the control panel wires to the chosen dashboard or wall position. Keep electrical cables away from the hot exhaust pipe and secure them with cable ties.
Ducting and Warm Air Outlets
Connect insulated ducting from the heater outlet to the areas that need warmth, usually the living area and sleeping berth. Minimise the number of bends, because each bend reduces airflow and raises fan noise. If two outlets are used, fit distribution valves so the user can balance heat between front and rear. Seal the duct joints with aluminium tape to prevent warm air leaking into uninsulated cavities.
First Start-Up Checks
After installation, bleed the fuel line according to the manual before the first ignition. Start the heater on a low setting and watch for a steady flame, normal fan speed and exhaust flow. Listen for any rattles from loose pipes, and check all connections for leaks with the unit warm. Run a cool-down cycle to confirm the shutdown sequence works and the low-voltage cut-off is set so the battery still has enough charge to start the engine.
Safety and Maintenance Access
Plan the installation so the service panel, fuel filter and glow plug remain reachable. A heater that is bolted behind an inaccessible panel will be neglected. Record the wiring diagram and torque settings for the next installer. A clean, well-sealed installation not only improves safety but also keeps particulate emissions and combustion noise to a minimum over the heater's working life.
