Vertical Diesel Air Heater Power Guide

2026-10-13 17:58:45

Choosing the right power rating is the most important decision when buying a vertical diesel air heater. Too small and the space never warms up; too large and the heater cycles, wastes fuel and drains the battery. This guide explains what the kilowatt rating means, how to match it to the heated space, and how power draw affects battery life.

What the Kilowatt Rating Means

The kW rating of a diesel heater is the rate of heat it delivers to the air, not the electricity it consumes. A 2 kW heater puts out two kilowatts of heat, a 5 kW unit five, and so on. Most vertical heaters modulate: they can run below their rated maximum on a low flame, then ramp up when the room is cold. So a 5 kW heater can hold a small room gently overnight while still having the reserve to warm it up quickly.

Matching Power to Insulated Volume

As a rough guide, a small van cab or berth of a few cubic metres needs around 2 kW. A family camper or a well-insulated day cab suits 5 kW. A large sleeper cab, a crew van or an insulated workshop benefits from 8 kW. The real driver is insulation: a well-lined van holds heat so a lower rating works, while a bare metal space demands more. Size for the coldest weather the vehicle will see, not the average.

Electrical Power Draw

Although heat comes from burning diesel, the heater still needs electrical power for the glow plug, fan and controller. At start-up the glow plug draws the most, several amps for a short period. Once running, the fan and pump draw a steady lower current, higher on fast heat-up and lower on economy mode. Buyers should compare the running current, not just the peak, because the overnight draw decides whether the battery lasts until morning.

Battery Sizing and Cut-Off

A heater that runs all night needs a battery that can supply the fan current without going flat. A leisure battery with ample capacity, paired with the vehicle's charging system, is the safe setup. Set the heater's low-voltage cut-off so it switches off before the battery drops below the level needed to start the engine. This protection is essential in trucks and vans where a flat battery means a stranded vehicle.

Power Settings in Practice

Use the high setting to warm the space quickly after a cold start, then turn back to economy for steady overnight heat. Modulation keeps the cabin comfortable with the least fuel and the least noise. When comparing units, ask for the low-end power range and the typical running current, because these figures reveal how the heater actually behaves through a night of heating rather than only on paper.
