Horizontal Diesel Air Heater Power Size

Why Power Size Matters
Choosing the correct heat output is one of the most important decisions when buying a horizontal diesel air heater. Too little power and the cabin never reaches comfort on cold nights. Too much power and the heater short-cycles, wastes fuel, and runs noisily. Matching the rating to the space keeps the unit efficient, quiet, and long lasting.
The 2 Kilowatt Class
A 2 kilowatt heater suits small, well-insulated spaces such as a camper van cabin, a small boat cuddy, or a weekend trailer. It runs on very little fuel and draws minimal battery power, which makes it ideal for occasional use and compact layouts where every watt of heat should go straight to the people inside.
The 5 Kilowatt Class
The 5 kilowatt heater is the popular middle choice. It comfortably handles a mid-size motorhome, a large van conversion, a family caravan, or a work truck sleeper. This rating balances warmth and fuel economy and is flexible enough for cool evenings and genuinely cold nights alike.
The 8 Kilowatt Class
An 8 kilowatt heater is reserved for large or poorly insulated spaces, including big class A motorhomes, large narrowboats, and construction site cabins in severe winter climates. It delivers high output when demanded but should be allowed to modulate down so it does not run flat out.
Sizing by Cabin Volume
A rough starting point is the interior cubic volume of the habitable space. Small cabins under ten cubic meters pair well with 2 kilowatts. Mid-size cabins from ten to twenty cubic meters favor 5 kilowatts. Larger spaces above twenty cubic meters usually call for 8 kilowatts. Treat these as starting points and adjust for the factors below.
Adjusting for Climate and Insulation
A well-insulated van in a mild climate needs less heat than a thin-walled trailer in a snowy region. Double-glazed windows, insulated floors, and closed cell panels lower the required output, while single-skin metal walls and drafty doors raise it. When in doubt, choose the next size up and rely on the thermostat to avoid overheating.
