Diesel Air Heater Noise Level Guide

2026-10-13 17:56:49

One of the most common questions buyers ask before fitting a diesel air heater is how noisy it will be at night. After all, a heater that works perfectly but keeps the camper or truck sleeper awake defeats the purpose of a warm rest. This guide explains where the sound comes from, what noise levels to expect, and what can be done to make the heater run more quietly.

How Loud Is a Diesel Air Heater

A typical 2kW or 5kW diesel air heater produces roughly 35 to 55 decibels at close range, depending on the power stage. At idle or low-flame mode it is closer to a soft background hum, while at full power during warm-up the fan and combustion are noticeably louder. Measured a metre or two away inside an insulated van, the sound is usually quieter than a small room air conditioner and is easily masked by gentle traffic noise.

Where the Noise Comes From

Most of the sound is not the flame itself but the centrifugal fan that pushes warm air through the ducts, plus the faint ticking of the fuel pump. A rattle or vibration usually means the unit is mounted rigidly against metal rather than on rubber isolators. A buzzing or whistling can come from a loose duct, a kinked exhaust or an air intake that is too close to the body panel.

Steps to Quiet a Noisy Heater

Start by checking the mounting: re-fit the rubber vibration mounts and make sure the bracket is not touching the bodywork. Line the warm air ducts with flexible hose and support them so they do not rattle against the floor. Fit the exhaust silencer as close to the heater as possible and avoid sharp bends in the exhaust pipe. If the fuel pump ticks loudly, mount it on a rubber block away from a flat panel that acts like a sounding board, and confirm the pump angle matches the manufacturer's recommendation.

What Noise Levels Are Acceptable

For overnight use in a camper or truck, aim for a heater that settles below about 45 decibels on low mode, which is quiet enough to sleep through. Running the thermostat at a moderate set point keeps the heater in low-flame mode, where the fan slows and the noise drops. Choosing a well-insulated, balanced unit and installing it with the simple isolation steps above makes the heater far quieter than an unbalanced unit, even before fitting extra sound deadening.
