Diesel Air Heater vs Electric Blanket: Which Heats a Sleeper Cab Cheaply?

2026-10-14 17:34:48

Drivers trying to stay warm on a layby often weigh a diesel air heater against an electric blanket. Both reduce overnight chill, but they draw on very different resources. The cheaper choice depends on where the electricity comes from and how much of the cab needs to be comfortable.

How Each Delivers Warmth

An electric blanket converts battery power directly into heat next to the body, typically pulling 40 to 80 watts. It warms a person under the covers but leaves the rest of the cab cold. A diesel air heater burns a small amount of fuel and warms the entire living space, including seats, walls, and bedding.

The Electricity Question

On shore power, an electric blanket is inexpensive and quiet. Running it purely from a 12-volt battery is another matter: 60 watts for eight hours pulls a large chunk of battery capacity and can leave little for starting the engine. The air heater, by contrast, draws only a small current while its heat comes mostly from fuel.

Practical Combination

Many drivers use both: the air heater takes the edge off the cab and keeps windows clear, while a low-wattage blanket adds personal warmth without requiring the heater to maintain a higher setpoint. For stops without shore power, the fuel-burning unit is the self-contained option that does not drain the starting battery.

Layered Comfort Strategies

Rather than choosing one heater, many drivers build a layered approach. The air heater keeps the cab, windows, and seats above the chill; a low-wattage electric blanket then adds direct warmth at a modest draw. This lets the air heater hold a lower setpoint, saving fuel, while the blanket compensates at the body. The combination often feels warmer than either device alone.

On shore power the blanket dominates the comfort at very low cost; on the road the air heater carries the load. Understanding where the electricity comes from decides which layer gets priority on any given stop.
