How Do You Estimate Cubic Metres a Diesel Air Heater Can Comfortably Heat?

Choosing the right output for a diesel air heater begins with the space itself. A heater that is too large cycles frequently and burns unevenly; one that is too small runs constantly and never reaches comfort. A rough estimate of cubic metres, adjusted for insulation, narrows the choice quickly.
Start With Volume
Measure the interior length, width, and height and multiply them to get cubic metres. A long-wheelbase van, for example, may be around 12 to 15 cubic metres, while a large sleeper cab is closer to 6 to 9. These figures set the baseline before insulation is considered.
Adjust for Heat Loss
A well-insulated space retains heat, so a 2 kW unit can comfortably manage around 10 to 15 cubic metres in mild cold. A 5 kW unit suits larger or leakier spaces up to roughly 25 cubic metres, or very small spaces in harsh weather. Single-glazed windows, thin walls, and uninsulated floors raise the heat loss and push the choice toward the next rating.
Leave Room for the Burn Range
Because modern units modulate, a slightly larger heater that can turn down often works better than a tiny one that runs flat out. The goal is a unit that spends most of its time at a moderate burn rather than cycling between maximum and off. Checking the lower heat output is as useful as checking the maximum.
A Worked Example
Take a long-wheelbase conversion measuring roughly 5.5 metres by 2 metres by 2.2 metres. Multiplying gives about 24 cubic metres. With decent wall and floor insulation, a 5 kW unit that modulates down suits the space, because it can raise temperature quickly on cold mornings and turn low overnight. A 2 kW unit would run almost continuously in the same insulated room on a frosty night.
If the same van had no floor insulation and large unglazed windows, the heat loss would push the choice toward the 5 kW even in mild weather. Re-measuring after insulation is fitted often lets owners downsize to a quieter, more efficient smaller unit.
