How Does the Combustion Fan Meter Air Into a Diesel Air Heater?

2026-10-14 17:32:56

Clean combustion in a diesel air heater depends as much on air as on fuel. While a small pump doses fuel in measured amounts, a separate combustion fan pulls in fresh air to match. The ratio between the two decides whether the flame burns efficiently, smokes, or flickers.

A Separate Air Stream

The heater keeps two air paths apart. One is the warm-air circuit, which pulls cabin or living air across the heat exchanger and returns it warmed. The other is the combustion circuit, which draws outside air directly into the burner. That combustion air never mixes with the air people breathe; it passes through the chamber and exits the tailpipe.

Matching Air to Fuel Rate

As the controller raises or lowers fuel delivery, it adjusts the fan speed to keep the air-fuel ratio within a narrow window. At high burn, more fuel needs more air; at low burn, both are reduced together. This is why modern units modulate smoothly rather than simply switching fully on and off.

What Happens When Air Is Restricted

A blocked intake filter or a long, kinked exhaust pipe starves the burner of air. The flame runs rich, soot builds on the exchanger, and exhaust becomes visible. The controller may detect the imbalance and reduce power or shut down. Keeping the combustion intake clean is therefore as important as using good fuel.

The Balance Across the Burn Range

Because the air-fuel ratio is held across the whole modulation range, the burner stays efficient whether it is warming a van quickly or idling through a mild night. At high output both fan and pump step up together; at low output both ease back. This is what lets modern units avoid the rich, smoky high-burn and the weak, unstable low-burn of simpler designs.

Servicing that restores this balance usually means cleaning the intake and verifying the fan speed, rather than altering the fuel pump. The controller is designed to hold the ratio; the installer's job is to keep air path and exhaust free.
