When Does Modulation Improve Fuel Saving on a Diesel Air Heater?

2026-10-14 17:33:34

Fuel economy in a diesel air heater is not only about the burner itself; it is about how the burner behaves over a whole evening. Units that can modulate their output use noticeably less fuel than units that run only at one fixed rate. The difference becomes clear in mildly cold conditions.

Fixed Burn Versus Stepped Burn

A fixed-rate heater runs at full output until the cabin reaches the setpoint, then switches off. It repeats this cycle all night, spending long periods at maximum fuel flow. A modulating heater instead dials back to a fraction of its rated output once the space is warm, holding temperature with a small, steady flame.

Where the Savings Appear

At part load the heater consumes far less fuel per hour, often a fraction of its high-rate figure. In a well-insulated van or sleeper that needs only modest warmth, the unit spends most of the night at low burn. The cumulative fuel over a week can be substantially lower than an on-off unit that repeatedly accelerates to full output.

When Modulation Matters Less

In an uninsulated workshop or an unusually cold snap, even a modulating heater may run near maximum to hold temperature, erasing the gap between the two designs. The saving is greatest when the heater rarely has to struggle, so that insulation and temperature setpoint matter as much as the burner's range.

Measuring the Real Saving

To judge modulation fairly, owners should compare a week of use rather than a single night. A fixed burner may burn similar fuel on a very cold night, but on mild nights it cycles heavily while a modulating unit simply turns down. Over a season, those mild nights dominate, and the cumulative gap becomes clear in the fuel can.

Keeping a simple log of litres used against the set temperature and outside conditions reveals how often the heater sits at low burn. The more hours spent at part load, the greater the advantage of a modulating design.
