Vertical All-in-One Diesel Air Heater vs Hydronic Loop: Which Fits a Van Conversion?

2026-10-14 17:40:34

When outfitting a van, builders weigh a vertical all-in-one diesel air heater against a hydronic heating loop. Both run on diesel and both keep the space warm, but they distribute heat in fundamentally different ways. The decision influences plumbing, weight, and how the finished van feels.

How the Two Systems Work

A hydronic burner heats a mixture of water and antifreeze, which is pumped to radiators or underfloor pipes and back to the burner. It offers quiet, even radiant heat and can also preheat the engine. A vertical all-in-one air heater blows heated air straight into the living space with no water, no pump loop, and no radiators.

Complexity and Weight

A hydronic system adds hoses, a pump, an expansion tank, radiators, and a control valve. It weighs more and needs more installation time, and any coolant leak requires attention. The all-in-one air heater is a single sealed unit connected to fuel, exhaust, and a duct, which suits a first-time builder.

Comfort and Flexibility

Hydronic heat feels gentle and silent, and it warms surfaces rather than moving air. For a conversion that wants instant warm air and simpler plumbing, the air heater reaches comfort within minutes. Builders often choose the air heater for compact vans and reserve hydronic for larger conversions that already plan around water systems.

Cost and Complexity Trade-Offs

A hydronic loop costs more up front and demands plumbing skill, but it rewards a finished conversion with silent radiant heat and engine preheat. The all-in-one air heater costs less and installs in a day, reaching comfort within minutes. A builder who wants warm floors and towel rails may lean hydronic; one who values simplicity and fast returns to the road leans air.

Resale and repairability also differ. An air heater is a single sealed unit that can be swapped whole, while a hydronic system distributes components across the van. For a first build, that simplicity often decides the choice before comfort preferences are weighed.
