What Mounting Clearance Does a Vertical All-in-One Diesel Air Heater Require Under a Seat?

2026-10-14 17:41:12

Under-seat mounting is a popular way to hide a vertical all-in-one diesel air heater in a van or boat, but the space around the unit is not arbitrary. Hot surfaces, warm-air outlets, and service access all require clearance. Fitting the heater flush against a panel invites heat buildup and complicates servicing.

Hot Surfaces and Air Gaps

The exhaust side and heat exchanger run hot, so a gap or a heat shield is needed between the unit and nearby upholstery, wood, or plastic. Manufacturers specify a minimum clearance, often a few centimetres, around these hot zones. Restricting that gap traps heat and can trigger the overheat protection.

Duct and Outlet Space

The warm-air outlet needs room for its duct to leave the heater without a sharp bend, and the combustion intake and exhaust must route cleanly outside. Crowding these connections restricts airflow and raises noise. A duct that kinks under the seat robs the heater of the airflow it needs to run cool.

Leaving Access for Service

The burner, glow plug, and filter need occasional checks, so the seat base or cover should lift away without tools. Good clearance around the front of the unit makes routine cleaning fast and prevents the heater from becoming a sealed-in box once the conversion is finished.

Clearance From Materials

Under-seat builds often use wood, carpet, or vinyl close to the heater, and these need protection from the hot exhaust side. A small metal heat shield, kept a few millimetres off the surface, deflects heat without trapping it. The warm-air outlet, by contrast, should not be boxed in by upholstery that could block the flow or scorch.

Because benches are assembled from many panels, it is easy to overlook one surface that sits close to a hot spot. A careful check after fitting, feeling which panels stay warm to the touch, confirms that clearance is adequate on every side.
