What kW Rating Suits a Horizontal All-in-One Diesel Air Heater for a 20 Cubic Metre Cabin?

A 20 cubic metre cabin is a middle-sized space: larger than a van, smaller than a roomy workshop. Choosing the kW rating of a horizontal all-in-one diesel air heater for it means matching heat output to both the volume and how well the walls hold warmth. An under-sized unit struggles; an over-sized one cycles.
Starting With the Volume
Rough guidance allows around 100 to 150 watts of heating per cubic metre for a reasonably insulated space in cold weather. Applied to 20 cubic metres, that suggests an output near 2 to 3 kW as a baseline. This assumes modest windows, insulated walls, and a ceiling around 2.4 metres.
Where a 5 kW Unit Fits
If the cabin is poorly insulated, has large glazing, or sits in a climate that regularly drops well below freezing, heat loss climbs toward the higher end. In that case a 5 kW horizontal unit, which can modulate down, is the safer choice: it handles the coldest spells and steps back on milder nights. A fixed 2 kW unit would run continuously.
Reading the Lower Output
Because horizontal units modulate, the lower heat rating matters as much as the maximum. A 5 kW unit that idles down to roughly 1 kW will hold the 20 cubic metre cabin comfortably, cycling gently rather than switching off and on. Checking that range prevents buying a heater that is too large to run steadily.
Adjusting for Real-World Heat Loss
Theoretical sizing is only a starting point. A cabin that opens onto a cold hallway, or that loses heat through an uninsulated door, needs headroom above the volume-based estimate. Choosing a modulating 5 kW unit provides that headroom while still turning down on mild days. Locking to a fixed 2 or 3 kW unit leaves no margin for the coldest week.
Owners can refine the estimate after living in the space for a season. If the heater rarely reaches full output, the room was slightly over-sized; if it runs constantly in January, the next unit up suits the reality.
