Why Does Bulkhead Mounting Change the Sound of a Vertical All-in-One Diesel Air Heater?

2026-10-14 17:37:47

Two identical vertical all-in-one diesel air heaters can sound quite different depending on where they are mounted. The unit itself contains a small fan and pump that vibrate slightly, and the surface it is bolted to can either absorb or amplify that motion. Bulkhead mounting is a common case worth understanding.

How Structure Carries Sound

When the heater is fastened directly to a thin metal bulkhead, fan vibrations travel into the panel, which then acts like a sounding board. The result is a low resonant hum that seems louder than the unit itself. The effect is strongest on large, flat panels with little damping.

The Role of Isolation

Rubber mounting feet or a flexible bracket break the direct path between heater and bulkhead. Small gaps of elastomer absorb vibration before it reaches the panel, so the fan sound stays close to the unit rather than spreading through the wall. Loose screws add a rattle in addition to the resonance.

Practical Mounting Tips

Mounting the heater on a thicker, reinforced section or adding a damping mat to the bulkhead reduces the panel's response. Securing fuel and exhaust lines with rubber clips prevents them from rattling against the wall as well. With proper isolation, the same unit that hummed loudly on a bare bulkhead becomes a quiet background presence.

Balancing Mounting Rigidity and Isolation

There is a middle ground between a bolted-down rattle and a floppy mount. The unit needs enough rigidity that it does not shift on rough roads, but enough give that vibration does not cross into the panel. Firm rubber feet usually hit this balance. Over-tightened screws squash the feet and turn the mount rigid again, recreating the hum, so the fasteners should be snug rather than crushed.

Adding a thin damping mat between the heater base and the mounting board further breaks the vibration path. The same treatment under the fuel pump and exhaust clips addresses the secondary rattles that survive even a well-isolated main unit.
