What Is the Typical Hourly Fuel Burn of a Vertical All-in-One Diesel Air Heater on Low Heat?

2026-10-14 17:38:35

Fuel consumption is often the first question buyers ask about a vertical all-in-one diesel air heater, and the answer changes sharply with the heat setting. At full output the unit consumes noticeably more, but on a quiet night it usually sits at its lowest burn rate. That figure matters most for multi-day off-grid trips.

Low Versus High Rates

A small 2 kW class unit typically burns around 0.1 to 0.2 litres of diesel per hour at its lowest setting, rising toward 0.4 to 0.5 litres per hour at maximum. A larger 5 kW unit may start near 0.15 litres per hour on low and reach roughly 0.5 litres at full power. The exact figures vary by model and altitude.

What a Full Night Looks Like

If a heater runs at low burn for eight hours, the fuel use is around one to two litres, depending on size and insulation. Compare that with idling a vehicle engine, which can consume several litres in the same period. The compact fuel tank on an all-in-one unit is often sized for multiple nights of this low-rate operation.

Factors That Raise Consumption

Open doors, thin insulation, and very cold outside temperatures push the heater out of its low burn range. Keeping the setpoint modest and the space sealed lets the unit linger at its efficient low setting, stretching a small fuel supply across the whole trip.

How Insulation Changes the Burn Rate

A van with reflective window covers and insulated walls lets the vertical unit stay at its low rate for most of the night, stretching fuel use toward the bottom of the range. A leaky shell forces the heater to climb to a higher burn to hold temperature, pushing consumption upward. Before blaming the heater for high fuel use, owners often find that adding curtains and sealing gaps trims the burn rate noticeably.

Tracking fuel over a settled week reveals the real low-rate figure for a given build. That number, rather than the nameplate maximum, is what matters for planning multi-day trips away from a fuel supply.
